The grid method is based on one simple rule: the number of grid squares must be identical on your reference photo and your drawing surface. The physical size of each square can differ — that difference is exactly how you scale a small photo up to a large canvas.
The calculation has two steps:
- Choose a cell size on your canvas (1 inch / 2 cm is standard), then
columns = canvas width ÷ cell sizeandrows = canvas height ÷ cell size. - Overlay the same columns × rows grid on your reference photo. Each cell on the photo is your photo width ÷ columns pixels wide.
When you copy what you see in each photo square into the matching square on your canvas, the proportions transfer accurately — a technique Albrecht Dürer and Leonardo da Vinci both used.
